Compared to the 1950s and 60s when Claiborne, Campbell and Scott counties were considered coal-mining country, the industry has nearly vanished, according to those who monitor it.
Yet the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation is set to resume regulation and permitting of Tennessee s coal mining, taking over from the federal Office of Surface Mining, Reclamation and Enforcement after 37 years. This includes overseeing mountaintop removal and mining in which the Earth s surface is removed and equipment digs into the ground to mine coal. ....

State Rep. Mike Carter Dies After Bout With Pancreatic Cancer

Colleagues are mourning the death of state Rep. Mike Carter, a highly respected Ooltewah Republican and former judge who carried clout in the Tennessee General Assembly.
Carter, 67, died Sunday of pancreatic cancer, which was detected in 2020 after he tested positive for COVID-19.

Mike Carter lost his battle with pancreatic cancer late last night, surrounded by his family. We ll miss him very much. We appreciate your prayers during this difficult time, said a tweet on Carter s Twitter account.

Tennessee legislature to pass religious exemptions from COVID vaccine


Infections have remained low in the state, but demand for vaccines stalled as vaccine hesitancy has persisted among some Tennesseans particularly Republicans. Lee and Health Commissioner Dr. Lisa Piercey said they hope to launch a media campaign in the next months to battle hesitancy and misinformation about vaccine safety.

Sen. Janice Bowling, who sponsors the legislation, previously argued COVID-19 vaccines could cause genetic modification  a theory debunked by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
