Wisconsin on brink of losing $50 million a month in federal food aid

MADISON - Wisconsin could start losing about $50 million per month in federal emergency funding for food stamps within weeks if state lawmakers do not replace an emergency declaration struck down by the Wisconsin Supreme Court this week.
The leader of the Assembly s health committee said Thursday he expects lawmakers will take necessary action to ensure the funding isn t lost, and Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said his house will discuss options in the coming weeks.
But the leader of the state Senate did not answer whether he would take similar action.
It’s a total mess and what a shame, Rep. Evan Goyke, D-Milwaukee, said Thursday.  We can confidently say that May s FoodShare allocation is in doubt at this point without an emergency order happening in the next couple of weeks. ....

The Assembly continued its partisan “investigation” into the 2020 presidential elections with a third invite-only hearing before the Assembly Committee on Campaigns and Elections on Wednesday.
While Democrats and voting access advocacy groups have labeled past hearings a “sham,” the answers from the sole invited guest were in marked contrast to the first two hearings that featured Republicans, many with no expertise, advancing conspiracy theories, anecdotal tales and unsubstantiated accusations of fraud.
The guest was nonpartisan Wisconsin Elections Commission Administrator Meagan Wolfe, who  remained pleasant over more than two hours of non-stop questioning, despite queries resembling a cross-examination on a witness stand. She noted at the outset that Wisconsin is one week away from its fifth election during a pandemic. But that was not the focus of the committee’s inquiry. ....

Most Wisconsin lawmakers say they plan on getting COVID-19 vaccine

Virtually all of the Wisconsin lawmakers who responded to a Wisconsin State Journal inquiry said they have or plan to get the COVID-19 vaccine — although the few who say they won’t and the majority of those who didn’t respond are Republicans.
The State Journal this week asked each member of the Wisconsin Legislature and the state’s congressional delegation if they had received the COVID-19 vaccine or if they planned to do so. Several lawmakers on both sides of the aisle said they plan to get vaccinated once they become eligible. On Monday, eligibility expands to all Wisconsin residents age 16 and older. ....
