SALT LAKE CITY If all goes as expected, Utah lawmakers will be addressing a name change for Dixie State University in their 2022 General Session.
Senate President Stuart Adams, addressing reporters Tuesday, said the bill calls for a public process and then for the university trustees and the Utah Board of Higher Education to make a recommendation to the Legislative Management Committee no later than Nov. 1.
Sen. Don Ipson, R-St. George, who is now the Senate floor sponsor of the latest version of HB278, predicts the name Dixie will remain on the campus in some capacity. ....

SALT LAKE CITY The Utah Senate moved a controversial bill setting the process to rename Dixie State University to the Senate Education Committee late Friday, after letting the legislation sit in limbo for more than a week.
When the committee may debate HB278 has not yet been posted on the Utah Legislature’s website. The legislative session ends at midnight on March 5. ....

SALT LAKE CITY The Utah Senate moved a controversial bill setting the process to rename Dixie State University to the Senate Education Committee late Friday, after letting the legislation sit in limbo for more than a week.
When the committee may debate HB278 has not yet been posted on the Utah Legislature s website. The legislative session ends at midnight on March 5.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Kelly Miles, R-South Ogden, passed handily in the House by a vote of 51-20 on Feb. 10. After it was transmitted to the Senate, some sources said it would not be considered further.
However, in recent days Senate leaders said they will debate the bill, although some have expressed concerns about a lack of buy-in from community members. Some area residents say the push for a name change was fueled by external forces and akin to cancel culture. ....

SALT LAKE CITY With the Utah Legislature marking the midpoint of its annual 45-day session, the issue of regulating centers for troubled teens got a high-profile boost when celebrity Paris Hilton testified on Capitol Hill about her time spent in such a facility in Provo.
Sitting in front of a panel of Utah lawmakers on Monday, Hilton said she’s had the same nightmare for the past 20 years in which she’s “kidnapped in the middle of the night by two strangers, strip searched and locked in a facility.”
Hilton and other “survivors of the troubled-teen industry” gave chilling testimony in front of the Senate Judiciary, Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee in support of SB127, sponsored by Sen.
