Lawmakers end the 2021 legislative session with ban on masks, election changes

(Photo by Perry Beeman/Iowa Capital Dispatch) Nearly three weeks into overtime and after three back-to-back nights of debate, Iowa’s 2021 legislative session is over. House Speaker Pat Grassley, R-New Hartford, told reporters early Thursday he wasn’t sure yet what Republicans would focus on next session, though he listed broadband and child care as issues that still needed work. He also said the proposed transgender sports ban, as proposed by Gov. Kim Reynolds, would be “part of the conversation between now and next session.” The Legislature will return for a special session, tentatively in August, to deal with redistricting, Grassley said. Normally, the Legislature would have handled that once-a-decade task during regular session, but the U.S. Census Bureau’s data was delayed.

Implementing Republican priorities as session winds down | News, Sports, Jobs

By Sen. Tim Kraayenbrink May 11, 2021 When we set out our priorities at the beginning of the year, they included helping Iowa recover from the pandemic, passing tax relief for hard-working Iowans, and implementing responsible , conservative budgets for the state. Last week, WalletHub reported Iowa ranked second in the country for fastest recovery following the pandemic. Iowa also has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, and April general fund receipts were the highest in Iowa’s history for that month. Iowa has more job openings than people looking for work. I have been contacting our federal representatives, sharing the concern I have heard from many of our local employers. Employers see it as counter-productive for the additional unemployment stipend given to unemployed workers. It is obvious this incentivizes workers to stay home instead of finding employment. Some experts have suggested the current unemployment benefits are equal to a salary of $25 per hour.

Budget dominates closing days of session | News, Sports, Jobs

bshea@messengernews.net The Iowa Senate and the Iowa House of Representatives are both controlled by Republicans, but they still have to negotiate some agreements with each other. That kind of dealmaking is what is going on now in the closing days of the 2021 legislative session, according to two Fort Dodge lawmakers. For those not directly involved in the talks, there is ”kind of a lot of sitting around and waiting,” state Rep. Ann Meyer, R-Fort Dodge, said Friday. State Sen. Tim Kraayenbrink, R-Fort Dodge, said some talks were going on Friday even as he and Meyer were participating in an Eggs and Issues forum at Iowa Central Community College.
