CADILLAC â Short-term vacation rentals are in the spotlight once again. The last time the state legislature looked at passing a law limiting local governmentâs ability to regulate short-term rentals like Airbnb or Vrbo, the city of Cadillac passed a resolution stating that the city wanted to keep that right instead of surrendering it to the state. The legislation didnât pass then but now itâs back. On Monday, the Michigan Municipal League, several Michigan cities and Housing North held a virtual media event and urged legislators to reject SB 446 and HB 4722. Itâs not that theyâre opposed to short-term rentals, the opponents of the legislation said during Mondayâs press conference. Itâs that they want the power to regulate them. ....
Jun 15, 2021 to Jun 17, 2021 Barb Eisenmann wasn’t thinking about calling the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration after her husband, Keith, fell to his death while trying to repair a roof on their Blissfield Township family farm in 2019. Under the law, she had eight hours to report a fatality. The law allows 24 hours for injury. Her failure to do so meant she and brother Zell would have to pay the $12,000 MIOSHA fine, which they did in 2020. Unlike some businesses, farming is often a family-run operation, without a human resources department to take care of business. New Michigan legislation is gaining traction to allow some leeway for family farms. ....

That s when a 45% cut in medical reimbursements that was included in the 2019 changes to Michigan s auto insurance law takes effect. We can t absorb the 45% pay cut and stay in business, says Randal Bruce, President of Aspire Rehabilitation Services, a residential treatment center in Troy. The agency provides everything from housing to physical therapy to counseling. It s just impossible. We looked at everything we could, there s just no way to do it. As of June 30, Aspire s 20 residents will need to find other places to live that can provide care for their traumatic injuries, and the company s 50 employees will be out of work. ....
View Comments Lansing A Michigan lawmaker who s been at the center of efforts to question the 2020 election introduced a bill Tuesday that would require fact checkers to register with the state. Rep. Matt Maddock, R-Milford, wrote the legislation, which was co-sponsored by eight other Republican House members, about five months after Maddock floated the idea of licensing fact checkers on Twitter. The Fact Checker Registration Act defines a fact checker as someone who publishes in print or online in Michigan, is paid by a fact-checking organization and is a member of the International Fact Check Network. The network is a reference to the Poynter Institute s International Fact-Checking Network, a unit launched by the journalism group in 2015 to train and develop best practices in fact checking, Maddock said. ....
From Staff Reports LANSING The Michigan House on Thursday approved legislation that aims to protect family farmers from fines that result from Michigan s workplace safety law. State Rep. Bronna Kahle, R- Adrian, introduced the bill following the death of Blissfield Township farmer Keith Eisenmann in November 2019. House Bill 4031 passed on an 83-25 vote. It will go to the Senate for consideration. Under current law, if a fatality happens on a family farm and the family does not report it to the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) within eight hours, the family faces thousands of dollars in fines, a news release from Kahle s office said. ....
