NEW YORK, NY – JetBlue Airways today announced it has joined The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB). As the first US airline member, JetBlue joins 100 other like-minded organizations in creating a market and standard for sustainable biomass and bio-based products. The RSB is an independent and global multi-stakeholder coalition which works to promote the sustainability of biomaterials. JetBlue will participate in discussions relating to the aviation sector.
“Biofuels are inevitable for the future of the aviation industry. We know we have to start laying the groundwork today as an investment in our future,” said Sophia Mendelsohn, head of sustainability, JetBlue. “In order to make this work, businesses globally need to join together for a low-carbon future.”
The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials and Bioledger are using blockchain technology to fight fraud and see how it can support traceability of biofuel and its feedstocks and overcome the vulnerabilities identified in securing the supply of sustainable renewables. The proposed solution a blockchain database that enables verifiable proof of origin, secure consignment creation, process simplification, audit efficiency, data integrity, and central governance was prototyped and trialed with project partners to process a total of 1,927,906 liters of feedstock, accurately representing real-life commercial and operational processes.

The facility, which utilizes LanzaTech technology, is the only commercial RSB-certified facility in China, and the first of its kind anywhere to receive this key certification for carbon capture and utilization.

The FLITE consortium, led by SkyNRG B.V. (Amsterdam, the Netherlands; www.skynrg.com) and with LanzaTech (Skokie, Ill.; www.lanzatech.com) as the technology provider, will build the first-of-its-kind LanzaJet Alcohol-to-Jet-fuel (AtJ) facility. The facility will convert waste-based ethanol to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at a scale of over 30,000 metric tons per year (m.t./yr). The project received €20 million in grant funding from the EU H2020 program and is a major milestone on the path to a net zero emission for the aviation industry.
