Adirondacks parking lot pass to be required in popular hiking area


The overwhelming spike in visitors created a catch-22: How do you encourage people to visit the Adirondacks, but also maintain the pristine wilderness environment when the traffic and the tourists reach overwhelming levels?
This summer, state and local agencies are trying new tactics to solve that problem starting with a parking registration program that will prevent parked cars from clogging a stretch of Route 73 near Ausable Road in Keene, Essex County, near the trailheads for popular hikes like Indian Head and and Rainbow Falls. 
The reservation system only pertains to the Adirondack Mountain Reserve, a 7,000-acre privately-owned property that offers access to several hiking trails. Other areas of the Adirondack Park s six million acres are not affected by this reservation system. ....

Hiker parking reservation system coming to AMR | News, Sports, Jobs

ST. HUBERTS A new parking reservation system is coming to a popular trailhead parking lot in the Keene hamlet of St. Huberts.
The new three-year pilot system at a parking lot operated by the Adirondack Mountain Reserve, a private entity associated with the Ausable Club, was announced by the state Department of Environmental Conservation on Monday, March 29. Hikers will be able to start making reservations on April 15 at https://www.hikeamr.org/.
Not only will reservations be required for the 70 parking spots in the AMR lot starting May 1, but hikers who walk to the AMR lot from elsewhere and don’t have a reservation won’t be allowed to access to trails on the property, nor the trailheads to Round and Noonmark mountains, which are accessed by walking through the AMR property. Hikers who access the wilderness elsewhere such as if they hike in through the Elk Lake Pass will still be allowed to exit through the AMR property, ....
