Horizons information and services manager Ged Shirley said there was an expectation from the Government, albeit without a formal direction, to have all bus drivers on the living wage by the end of 2021. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, which co-funds bus services, told Horizons it would fund a share of the increased costs, Shirley said. Transport manager Rhona Hewitt said not all drivers would get a pay increase but there were some who were paid either the minimum wage or close to it.

Planning for a $250 million redevelopment of roads in and around Palmerston North is the proposed top priority for transport spending in the Horizons region in the next 10 years. The council’s regional transport committee on Monday recommended adoption of the draft regional land transport plan which will go out for public consultation next week. It lists 19 significant projects for the region, setting priorities based on connectivity and access, safety, better travel options, reducing carbon emissions and resilience in the network.
