CLINTON — The Clinton City Council declined to reduce rent for Candlelight Inn this week, citing fairness to other businesses that have faced financial difficulties during the pandemic.
Matt Prescott manages Candlelight Inn at 511 Riverview Drive in Clinton. Like other business owners, Prescott had to figure out how to keep his employees and stay open while following COVID restrictions.
“We met with Matt several times . dating back to when COVID started,” City Administrator Matt Brooke told the City Council on Tuesday. During a conversation with Brooke, Prescott asked if the council might be open to giving him a break on the rent for a few months, Brooke said. ....

City contracts for demolition of downtown building

The building at 130 Fifth Ave. South in Clinton will be demolished after a structural engineer declared it unsafe. The Clinton City Council awarded the demolition job to Lawson Rigging of Sabula for about $206,000.Winona Whitaker | Clinton Herald
CLINTON — Lawson Rigging of Sabula will demolish a downtown building after receiving a contract for the demo from the City of Clinton last week.
The City Council accepted bids for demolition and removal of the building at 130 Fifth Ave. South last week, awarding the contract to Lawson at $206,759. Colgan Excavating of Savanna, Illinois bid $247,000.
All work must be substantially completed by Jan. 31 and fully completed on or before April 15, 2021. ....
