Up to 250,000 workers could lose their jobs when the JobKeeper wage subsidy ends this month as insolvency data reveals just three companies have used the federal government’s new rules to help struggling employers restructure to avoid shutting down.
The end of the $90 billion JobKeeper program on March 28 is expected to result in thousands of businesses failing, pushing 125,000 to 250,000 people out of work, University of Melbourne Professor Jeff Borland estimates. His analysis also considers revenue declines and businesses that would have closed under normal trading conditions but have been kept afloat due to the wage subsidy scheme. ....

The boom in buy now pay later schemes has seen many consumers ditch their credit cards in 2020 and join this latest payment craze.
Millions of Australians have shopped up a storm this year via their computers, tablets and smartphones and are preferring to pay off their goods in instalments instead of whacking the full amount on plastic.
Latest figures from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission showed in the 2017-18 financial year there were 16.8 million buy now pay later (BNPL) transactions.
This climbed to 32 million in the 2018-19 financial year - an increase of 90 per cent.
