World famous Andy Capp to finally taste Tusker

With his boozy exploits, cheeky humor, and expert job dodging, Andy Capp has been entertaining millions of readers for more than six decades, and now he gets to taste Tusker larger.

William H. Kobin, the broadcast journalism pioneer who served as president and CEO of KCET during its glory days by turning the debt-ridden public television station into an essential educational and cultural institution in Southern California, has died. He was 91.
Kobin died Friday at his Brentwood home of complications from Parkinson’s disease, according to his former communications executive and longtime friend Barbara Goen.
Kobin, who worked in public television for 50 years, served as KCET s president from 1983 to 1996 and made important contributions to the local station during his tenure. He is credited with discovering broadcast legend Bill Moyers his proudest accomplishment and putting Tennessee native Huell H ....

Public Media and KCET Legend Bill Kobin Dies at 91

At KCET, Kobin hired television personality Huell Howser, whose “California’s Gold,” “Visiting with Huell Howser” and other programs continue as mainstays in the station lineup, even after Howser’s death seven years ago. Kobin and his team are credited with helping to create community outreach programs that included “Life & Times,” “California Stories” and “KCET Journal.”
“Bill was the one who said, ‘Yes, we are going to put news and public affairs up there with other key programs,” said Val Zavala, a former KCET news director who co-hosted “Life & Times” with many other top Los Angeles journalists. “We couldn’t do it without him. He had such commitment and such integrity and yet he was one of these quiet strong leaders. I was just so fortunate to be there when he was there. ....
