Inquest ordered, foreigners released following New Year's death


Three foreigners who were detained following the death of a man on New Year’s Day, have been released after the Director of Public Prosecutions, Roger Gaspard SC, ordered an inquest, the Police Service has confirmed.
The three suspects, ages 49, 24, and 20 years, who live in Macoya, were detained immediately following the death of Aarif Mohammed, which occurred on January 1st in Tunapuna.
Around 10:25pm on Friday 1st January 2021, police officers responded to a report of an altercation in progress at Lot No. 148 Macoya Extension Road, Tunapuna.  On arrival, they interviewed several persons.
Police officers observed Aarif Mohammed, clad in a grey jersey and blue long pants lying on the ground in a pool of blood.  Police officers noted that both his hands and feet were tied, and he was unresponsive but showed signs of life. ....

While the two children of murdered teacher Suzette “Suzy” Sylvester wept and consoled each other at the funeral on Friday, her mourners’ outpouring of love and tributes brought them laughter.
Past and present co-workers and students, relatives and residents shared fond memories.
Sylvester’s husband, Kurt Sylvester, 48, did not attend, as he was expected to face a Couva magistrate on Friday charged with her murder.
On Thursday evening, Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard, SC, advised police to charge Sylvester, a bank worker, after reviewing a file submitted by legal officer PC Kyrn Lewis. Insp Rebeiro of the Homicide Bureau Region III supervised investigations and WPC Ransome laid the charge. ....

Bank worker charged with teacher's murder


A 47-year-old bank employee has been charged with the murder of his wife, a school teacher.
Kurt Sylvester was charged with murder on Thursday 7 January, 2021, following the advice of Director of Public Prosecutions, Roger Gaspard SC. Sylvester was arrested and charged relative to the circumstances surrounding death of his wife, Suzette Sylvester, which occurred on Monday 4 January, 2021.
Around 6.15am on Monday 4 January, 2021, police responded to a report at Mowlah Road, Preysal Village, Couva.
On arrival at the address, officers met an occupant of the home, who directed them to a bedroom at the said address.
Officers proceeded to the bedroom, where they found the body of a female, who at the time was wrapped in a green and white bed sheet, with blood in the area of her head and on the floor. ....

ON DECEMBER 2, Nazma Muller, Adrian Gookool, Elizabeth Solomon and Denise Pitcher, the executive director of the Caribbean Centre for Human Rights, and myself met with the Director of Public Prosecution, Roger Gaspard, at his Richmond Street office.
Gaspard was bold, forthcoming and enlightening. He agreed to review a list of cases of inmates that we had compiled. Although “the bandwidth of problems in the criminal justice system was too broad” (Gaspard) to cover in a two-hour meeting, the following issues were discussed:
Plea Bargaining Act: One of the purposes of this act was to cure delays. But litigants and their attorneys are not tripping over themselves to get to the DPP’s office to plea-bargain. ....
