Anti-GM campaigner urges organics to back 'inevitable' gene editing launch | News

The government said gene editing would allow farmers to be less reliant on pesticides to protect their crops
The organic sector must make a radical departure from its outright opposition to genetic editing or else risk being “ridiculed and marginalised”, leading figures have warned.
The government launched a consultation on genetic editing (GE) earlier this month, arguing the technology would help farmers adapt to the challenges of sustainable food production.
The organic sector has been vehemently opposed to genetic technologies in the past, but Alex Smith, vocal anti-GM campaigner and chair of the FDF Organic Committee, said this week he believed the tide of opinion on GE had now changed and approval was “inevitable”. Post-Brexit Britain seeks to ‘unlock substantial benefits’ of gene editing
Food from gene edited animals and crops may soon be permitted in England.
The UK’s Environment Secretary George Eustice announced the launch of a 10-week consultation on the future of gene editing at the Oxford Farming Conference.
Both gene editing and genetic modification are banned by the EU. With the long Brexit process now concluded, Eustice said the consultation could ‘unlock substantial benefits to nature and the environment, helping farmers produce more resilient crops and to produce healthier, more nutritious food’.
“Gene editing has the ability to harness the genetic resources that mother nature has provided, in order to tackle the challenges of our age. This includes breeding crops that perform better, reducing costs to farmers and impacts on the environment, and helping us all adapt to the challenges of climate change,” he said. ....
