UK Rosenberg Law, Patterson School Student to Study Turkish on Boren Fellowship

The Boren Awards fund up to $25,000 for undergraduates and graduate students to support language study, research and study abroad in world regions critical to U.S. interests. Jenson’s award is part of the Turkish Flagship Language Initiative (TURFLI), which funds a summer program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in addition to language study at the Azerbaijan University of Languages in Baku, Azerbaijan, during the fall semester.     
Along with Jenson, two UK students were named alternates for the 2021 Boren Awards:
Victor Montgomery, a diplomacy and international commerce graduate student and 2018 modern and classical languages, literatures and cultures/Russian studies graduate. ....

University Senate's Collaborations Help Students and Faculty Navigate Pandemic

This past year, the University Senate and its executive body, the Senate Council, worked hard to balance the needs of instructors and students, who have been caught up in a whirlwind of unanticipated, life-changing shifts.
Aaron Cramer, chair of the University Senate Council and faculty member in the College of Engineering, explains that “because the Senate is comprised of about 100 elected faculty senators, plus 18 students and various administrators, the University Senate is always poised to provide input and present solutions, even more so during these challenging times.”
Jennifer Bird-Pollan, former Senate Council chair and faculty member in the Rosenberg College of Law, recalls the beginning of the pandemic. ....

Recently, a number of DEI projects have been given a greenlight, including moving forward with a comprehensive diversity master plan; creating an art fund in which 1% of all capital projects $1 million and above will be designated for diverse art; and the hiring of UK’s first supplier diversity manager.
The College of Public Health, as only one example of college and unit work across the campus, has organized a series of events to foster “an anti-racist academic environment (and) address the role of structural racism in tackling health inequities in the U.S.,” Perez-Figueroa and Cardarelli said. ....
