Letter To The Editor: Thank You New Mexico Legislature And Governor For Outlawing Traps And Snares On Public Lands

I would like to echo the sentiments of another letter and publicly thank the New Mexico Legislature and our governor for outlawing the use of traps, snares and similar devices on public lands in our state.
Senate Bill 32, The Wildlife Conservation and Public Safety Act, had four committed sponsors, including Sen. Roberto “Bobby” Gonzales and Rep. Christine Chandler, both of whom represent Los Alamos; as well as Sens. Brenda McKenna and Matthew McQueen.
Forty-five years ago my family came upon a trapped animal during a Christmas tree outing in the Jemez mountains. I have never forgotten the sickening horror associated with that incident. ....

SANTA FE – After winning approval in the Senate, a bill banning the trapping of fur-bearing animals on New Mexico public lands is facing a race to navigate the House in just over a week to end up on Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s desk for final approval.
Supporters of the bill, Senate Bill 32, were optimistic about their chances on Wednesday, a day after the Senate passed the bill in a late-night vote.

Although similar legislation has been proposed in past years, the Tuesday vote marked the first time such a bill has cleared either legislative chamber. ....

SANTA FE The state Senate late Tuesday passed a bill that would ban traps, snares and wildlife poisons on public land in New Mexico legislation supporters said would help prevent animal cruelty.
The measure, Senate Bill 32, will head next to the House with just 11 days left in the session.
Democratic Sens. Roberto “Bobby” Gonzales of Ranchos de Taos and Brenda McKenna of Corrales said the ban would protect dogs and other pets from strangulation or catastrophic injuries. ....

SANTA FE When Mary Katherine Ray volunteers for Trap Free New Mexico, an organization that opposes trapping of fur-bearing animals in the state, it can be an intense experience.
She told members of the Senate Conservation Committee on Tuesday that she receives emails from those whose dogs have been caught in traps, often including graphic descriptions and photographs. ....
