At least 25 people, including at least one police officer, were killed in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday in a shootout during a police raid targeting drug traffickers in the city s Jacarezinho neighborhood, according to civil police.
It was the highest-ever death toll from a police raid in the state, which has for decades suffered from drug-related violence.
This is the highest number of deaths in a police operation in Rio, surpassing 19 in Complexo do Alemão in 2007, said Chief of Police Ronaldo Oliveira. ....

At least 25 people were killed in a shootout between police and a gang in a slum of the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro.
The victims included one police officer, and the remainder were suspected members of the drug gang in what was the deadliest single police operation in 16 years for Rio state.
Two passengers on a nearby subway were also hit by stray bullets, but are expected to survive,
Police say they were conducting an operation against drug traffickers in the Jacarezinho slum of northern Rio when the raid spiralled into violence. TV news footage showed suspects fleeing along rooftops as police approached in armoured vehicles. ....

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – At least 25 people have been killed after hundreds of heavily armed police stormed into one of Rio de Janeiro’s largest slum areas, reportedly targeting drug traffickers.
Local media showed live footage of seven armed young men hopping through the roofs of North Zone’s Jacarezinho favela in the early hours of Thursday morning, as bulletproof helicopters hovered over them.
The report said the “extremely suspicious criminals” were attempting to escape from the police. Two passengers on the metro were hit by a stray bullet and one police officer was killed. ....

RIO DE JANEIRO The death toll from a police raid on a drug gang in a poor Rio de Janeiro neighborhood on Thursday has risen to 28, civil police said on Friday, the deadliest operation ever carried out by the security forces in the Brazilian city.
The bodies of three more victims removed from the favela on Friday were men with links to organized crime, according to police. Twenty-four other people and a police officer also died in the operation in the northern Rio neighborhood of Jacarezinho.
