(AP) – Two Nigerian nurses were attacked by the family of a deceased COVID-19 patient. One nurse had her hair ripped out and suffered a fracture. The second was beaten into a coma.
Following the assaults, nurses at Federal Medical Centre in the Southwestern city of Owo stopped treating patients, demanding the hospital improve security. Almost two weeks passed before they returned to work with armed guards posted around the clock.
“We don’t give life. It is God that gives life. We only care or we manage,” said Francis Ajibola, a local leader with the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives. ....

Insults, beatings, arrests – health workers battling the coronavirus were subjected to more than 400 acts of violence related to Covid-19 worldwide in 2020, according to a report by a health NGO published Tuesday.

A new report by the Geneva-based Insecurity Insight and the University of California, Berkeley’s Human Rights Center unveiled a report that shows  a minimum estimate  of 1,172 violent acts and attacks occurred against health workers or facilities last year.  ....

Nurses face increasing assault from families of Covid victims


Nurses at the Federal Medical Centre in the Southwestern city of Owo, Nigeria stopped treating patients after two nurses were badly beaten early last month.
Relatives of a COVID-19 patient who died attacked the nurses on duty. One nurse had her hair ripped out and suffered a fracture. The second was beaten into a coma. Both are recovering from their injuries.
Following the assaults, the nurses demanded justice and called for the hospital to improve security and other working conditions. Almost two weeks passed before they returned to work.
Armed security personnel have now been posted to the hospital to run 24-hour service within the hospital, said Felix Orobode, secretary of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives. ....
