Travellers at Rayleigh Leisure Centre given deadline to leave

Council bosses say they will beef up security in areas which have been previously used by travellers.
It comes as Essex Police ordered a group of travellers based at Rayleigh Leisure Centre to leave the area by 10am tomorrow morning (Friday, April 23).
Around 30 caravans are understood to have pitched up outside the site in Priory Close - for the fifth time in the last year.
Initially, half a dozen caravans arrived at the leisure centre on Friday evening before the number rapidly increased over the weekend.
In an update this afternoon, Rochford Council said: Essex Police have confirmed a Section 61 notice has been served this morning on the Traveller group at Rayleigh Leisure Centre. ....

Local residents have understandable concerns about litter, waste, noise and dogs running out of control.
While there I spoke with deputy leader of the council Cheryl Roe, and the current incursion is being dealt with through the civil courts.
I am confident that the police will support the council if there is evidence of criminal behaviour.
To deal with unlawful encampments more effectively, we need the bill currently in front of parliament - which will make aggravated trespass a criminal offence, and for which local MP Mark Francois has campaigned - to become law.
This is likely to happen later this year. ....

Mark Francois, Member of Parliament for Rayleigh and Wickford, has called for a change in the law to make it easier for authorities to move them on.
He said the UK Government should adopt the “Irish Option” which would see deliberate trespass become a criminal offence, rather than a civil one, meaning those who break the rules would faces tougher penalties.
Mr Francois said: “Time and again, we go through this ridiculous cat and mouse game, to evict travellers from land they are illegally occupying.
“However, the process can be time consuming, as well as costing local council tax payers’ money, because trespass remains a civil offence in law. ....
