During the economic downturn a decade ago, the business startup rate fell and never fully recovered, which contributed to a slow recovery. Even before that, the startup rate had been trending down since the 1980s. That is troubling because startups play crucial roles in the economy. They create most net new jobs. They are a key source of innovation because new products are often pioneered by new companies. And they challenge dominant firms, which helps to restrain prices and expand consumer choices.
This report argues that state and local policymakers should slash regulatory barriers to startup businesses. State governments should repeal certificate of need requirements and minimum wage laws, liberalize occupational licensing and restaurant alcohol licensing, and fully legalize marijuana and hemp businesses. 'Indirect bribes' fueled corruption at City Hall, feds say

When the U.S. attorney’s corruption case targeting Los Angeles City Hall first broke into view, much of the public’s attention focused on vivid descriptions of cash bribes, escort services and lavish trips to Las Vegas.
But as the investigation has unspooled over the past year, federal prosecutors have laid out another, less sensational set of allegations: that a deputy mayor-turned-real estate consultant worked to arrange “indirect bribes” for city officials by routing the money through those officials’

Poor road conditions cost Canadian drivers $3 billion annually, CAA study finds

A new study by Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) finds drivers are paying $3 billion annually in higher vehicle operating costs due to poor roads, infrastructure and potholes.
Experts say the blame is Canadian weather as one day it s sunny and mild and the next day it s below freezing – the perfect ingredients to make potholes.
The city of Toronto has a budget of 4.7 million dollars for 2021 to refill potholes and has already refilled almost 50,000 potholes this year. Each one costs about $25 to repair.
However, CAA said the cost to drivers is even more as the study found each vehicle owner has $126 dollars in added costs each year due to the poor quality of roads which costs Canadians $3 billion annually. ....
