In a sign of how Florida’s economic outlook has changed over the past year, Florida TaxWatch isn’t emphatically calling for Gov. Ron DeSantis to veto all of the “turkeys” it has identified in a record spending plan passed by lawmakers.
With the surprisingly flush $101.5 billion budget proposal expected to formally go to DeSantis soon, TaxWatch President Dominic Calabro said Monday the 116 turkeys on his group’s annual list are “strong suggestions” for vetoes. The turkeys, a Tallahassee term for questionable spending items, total $157.5 million.
Last year, as the state’s economy was hammered by the COVID-19 pandemic, TaxWatch argued for the governor to cut everything on its list of 180 projects that made the budget. Generally, turkeys are projects put into the budget without proper public oversight or that exceed publicly proposed amounts. ....

Florida TaxWatch President Dominic Calabro said the 116 turkeys on his group’s annual list are “strong suggestions” for vetoes. The turkeys, a Tallahassee term for questionable spending items, total $157.5 million.
They include several in the greater Tampa Bay region, including $25 million for the Pasco-Hernando State College Center for Student Success and Community Engagement.

Jason Fischer's cybersecurity work will factor into his Senate run

In a world where everyone wants their technology to work, but no one wants to know how it works, Jacksonville Rep.
Jason Fischer has embarked on the sometimes thankless job of stepping up the state’s tech infrastructure.
“I grew up as a digital native, and so that’s just how I naturally approach things,” Fischer told Florida Politics in a post-Session interview.
The Republican lawmaker’s background makes him well-suited for the job. Fisher is an electrical engineer and a member of InfraGard, a partnership between the FBI and the private sector that deals with protection of U.S. critical infrastructure like cybersecurity, which means Fischer understands the threats cybersecurity risks pose to government. ....

Jeff Brandes[/caption] Jurors would be told what a plaintiff’s actual paid medical expenses were and what prevailing medical-care rates are — for unpaid health care — rather than what the plaintiff was billed under a bill approved in the Senate Judiciary Committee March 9. SB 846 by Sen. Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg, revives the effort in recent legislative sessions to change what jurors are told about medical expenses for plaintiffs in personal injury and wrongful death cases. Where medical expenses have been paid, the amount recoverable would be limited to the amount paid, regardless of the source. With unpaid medical bills, the amount presented could not exceed the amount that would be paid by the patient’s health insurance.
