After nearly a decade on the job, First District Commissioner Randy Bahr and Second District Commissioner Joe Getting were honored at their final meeting last Thursday.
Presiding Commissioner Garry Nelson presented each with a plaque and the courthouse staff provided a farewell cake and ice cream.
Gettinger, who took office in January 2013, opted not to run for a third term. He is being replaced by former Ste. Genevieve Alderman Randy Ruzicka, who beat Tony Ritter in the November election. Bahr, who was appointed by Governor Jay Nixon to fill an unexpired term in September 2011, before being elected to two terms, was defeated by Karen Stuppy in November.

Since Jeanette Wood agreed to take on the duties of Ste. Genevieve County Health Department administrator the first week in September, a cloud had hung over her head.
That cloud, the County Commission’a concern that she could not legally hold the position after having just served on the county health board, finally burst last week.
Wood agreed to resign during last Thursday’s County Commission meeting after Presiding Commissioner Garry Nelson and Prosecuting Attorney Wayne Williams discussed the situation with her.
“The problem is we’re breaking the law and we know it,” Nelson told Wood. “I took an oath to support the Missouri Constitution and the laws that go with it. That man (Williams) did the same thing. We have nothing against Jeanette Wood. You’ve been a community pillar for 40 years, we’ve been friends for 20 years. If it was Randy Bahr sitting here, it would be the same thing.”

Ste. Genevieve County will be receiving another Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) grant to help pay for replacing an old dump truck.
Presiding Commissioner Garry Nelson announced the news during last Thursday’s Commission meeting.
He also explained the grant to incoming commissioners Karen Stuppy and Randy Ruzicka, who were in attendance, as well as outgoing commissioners Randy Bahr and Joe Gettinger.
The grant is to encourage entities to replace aging diesel trucks with poor emissions standards with newer models that pollute the environment less. The grants pay 25 percent of the purchase price of a new dump truck, which Nelson explained, is generally in the $160,000 range, with bed and other accessories added. The grant therefore drops the price to about $120,000.
