County Commissioners, Schmeider Brace For Winter Weather

By Editor | January 6, 2021 By MARK EVANS mevans@stegenherald.com With the first winter weather predicted for the county, Ste. Genevieve County commissioners wanted to make sure road and bridge foreman Scott Schmieder was prepared at last Thursday’s commission meeting. Schmieder said his crews were already putting salt on hills and curves and would be ready for snow or ice over the weekend. Presiding Commissioner Garry Nelson asked if all the trucks were being kept under cover. Schmieder said that while not all are inside enclosed strictures, they are all at least under cover. The agreed that ice getting in dump trucks already loaded with cinders or salt should be avoided.

Commission Looks at CARES Act In Short Meeting

By Editor | December 30, 2020 By MARK EVANS mevans@stegenherald.com Discussion of the Caronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act took up much of the Ste. Genevieve County Commission’s abbreviated Dec. 23 meeting. The commission met for about two hours that Wednesday, since the courthouse was closed on Christmas Eve. The commission was feeling the stress of not knowing how things would play out in Washington, D.C. between Christmas and New Year’s Day. The $2,099,323 in CARES Act money the county received came with some strings attached. One notable string was that it must be spent by Dec. 31 or returned.

County Will Get Another DERA Grant For New Truck

By Editor | December 17, 2020 By MARK EVANS mevans@stegenherald.com Ste. Genevieve County will be receiving another Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) grant to help pay for replacing an old dump truck. Presiding Commissioner Garry Nelson announced the news during last Thursday’s Commission meeting. He also explained the grant to incoming commissioners Karen Stuppy and Randy Ruzicka, who were in attendance, as well as outgoing commissioners Randy Bahr and Joe Gettinger. The grant is to encourage entities to replace aging diesel trucks with poor emissions standards with newer models that pollute the environment less. The grants pay 25 percent of the purchase price of a new dump truck, which Nelson explained, is generally in the $160,000 range, with bed and other accessories added. The grant therefore drops the price to about $120,000.
