The explosion of retail trader interest in companies such as GameStop has kickstarted a hedge fund gold rush for algorithms that can scrape sites such as Reddit for stock tips.
In recent weeks, day traders have beat hedge funds at their own game by turning to online communities, including the WallStreetBets forum on Reddit, to pile money into failing companies and send the stock price soaring.
Hedge funds are now fighting back. “It s been crazy,” said Christopher Kardatzke, a co-founder of Quiver Quantitative which has developed software to analyse posts from social media including the influential WallStreetBets forum on Reddit that sent GameStop shares soaring.
