Creating a space for the arts was a natural fit for Rachel Schwarz.
The classically trained singer opened Brio Academy in Chatham in 2017 and later expanded to Ridgetown in 2019. The business – for which Schwarz was named Entrepreneur of the Year by the Chatham-Kent Chamber of Commerce – offers children classes ranging from visual art to martial arts.

Her children influenced her to open the multi-disciplinary centre, Schwarz said.
“I wanted to build something that would be a place where they could grow up and explore the arts and everything like that,” she said. “We have an awesome community of families that see things the same way we do.”

A boost for the Chatham-Kent Children’s Treatment Centre, thanks to students from the Brio Academy.
Students and families from the creative arts school hosted a virtual holiday concert just before Christmas, featuring performances from some of the dance, musical theatre, and drama classes.
“Many of our families have been touched by the work the CTC does, and everyone jumped at the chance to work on this initiative,” says Brio founder and artistic director, Rachel Schwarz says. “We are so proud of our incredible Brio students, families and faculty, and touched by the generosity of everyone who donated.”
