Upon arrival, several shell casings were located in the road. Officers observed bullet holes into what would be commonly occupied areas of a residence. No was inside the home could be contacted. Stranger who had been drinking, uses hose to put out garage fire From public records View Comments 60 block of Stewart Avenue - A 34-year-old woman awoke early Sunday morning to find her garage on fire and a stranger using her garden hose to put it out. She told police she took the hose from him. The fire was extinguished before the fire department arrived. She also told police the man, whom she had never seen before, likely was intoxicated because he was unsteady on his feet and he smelled of alcohol. The man told her he d been walking by and sprang into action when he saw the garage on fire. He left the area before police and firefighters arrived.

Lt Richard J Roughgarden, Who Fell in Vietnam, Honored with Street Dedication at Rea Avenue and Lincoln

May 4, 2021 at 1:00 PM HAWTHORNE, NJ - On Saturday, the Rea Avenue ramp to Route 208 from Lincoln Avenue was temporarily closed off as the borough dedicated the street corner to the memory of Richard J. Roughgarden, right across from the home he once lived in. Roughgarden was honored with a sign declaring the area First Lt. Richard J. Roughgarden, USA Way in commemoration of his service to his country in the Vietnam War. The ceremony was led by Council President Frank Matthews, standing in for Mayor Goldberg who had suffered a fractured leg Wednesday and could not attend.  The Marine Corps League, Lakeland Detachment #744, began by posting the colors, followed by the pledge of allegiance as said by a gathering of family members, friends, and local officials.  Pastor Howie Van Dyk of the Hawthorne Gospel Church delivered the invocation.  Lord, we thank you for the fact we can gather on this busy street corner that we can have a moment of silent to remember our fallen hero.�
