HAWTHORNE, NJ - On Saturday, the Rea Avenue ramp to Route 208 from Lincoln Avenue was temporarily closed off as the borough dedicated the street corner to the memory of Richard J. Roughgarden, right across from the home he once lived in.
Roughgarden was honored with a sign declaring the area First Lt. Richard J. Roughgarden, USA Way in commemoration of his service to his country in the Vietnam War.
The ceremony was led by Council President Frank Matthews, standing in for Mayor Goldberg who had suffered a fractured leg Wednesday and could not attend. The Marine Corps League, Lakeland Detachment #744, began by posting the colors, followed by the pledge of allegiance as said by a gathering of family members, friends, and local officials. Pastor Howie Van Dyk of the Hawthorne Gospel Church delivered the invocation. Lord, we thank you for the fact we can gather on this busy street corner that we can have a moment of silent to remember our fallen hero.
