BMC commissioner urges Mumbaikars to come forward for testing


To take preventive steps early and save lives, BrihanMumbai municipal corporation (BMC) commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has urged citizens to come forward and get themselves tested.
 
Mumbai has seen a dip in Covid-19 cases in the last few days after an unprecedented increase in cases since the start of the second wave, when the BMC increased testing to as many as 56,000 tests on a single day.
 
Chahal said that aggressive testing policy has brought down reduction in the positivity rate in Mumbai city which might have reduced the natural demand for home collection of swabs by citizens in the last few days. “But the number of daily tests needs to increase.” ....

This Maharashtra district set up oxygen plants just ahead of the curve


Nandurbar, a tribal and hilly district in Maharashtra with a population of 20 lakh, is an unlikely contender for setting a precedent for the rest of India, but under the leadership of district collector Dr Rajendra Bharud, it took several measures to augment medical oxygen supply ahead of the second wave of Covid-19. Now that Delhi and several other cities are running short of oxygen for critical patients, this district is well equipped to meet the challenge.
This is surprising for a district whose human development index is 0.604. Nandurbar is far away from big cities. It has limited private health facilities and resources – there are only two government doctors with an MD degree. There are no medical colleges. When there are no testing facilities, it would be too much to expect a liquid oxygen plant. ....

The ferocious second wave showed no signs of halting as India reported 3,79,257 new cases Thursday, but the good news was that the case fatality rate declined to 1.11%, and the cumulative number of vaccine doses administered in the country crossed 15 crore.
Cumulatively, 15,00,20,648 vaccine doses have been administered through 22,07,065 sessions, as per the provisional report till 7 am Thursday. These include 93,67,520 HCWs who have taken the 1st dose and 61,47,918 HCWs who have taken the 2nd dose, 1,23,19,903 FLWs (1st dose), 66,12,789 FLWs (2nd dose), 5,14,99,834 1st dose beneficiaries and 98,92,380 2nd dose beneficiaries more than 60 years old and 5,10,24,886 (1st dose) and 31,55,418 (2nd dose) beneficiarie ....
