Joy Hopwood Kathy Luu and Damian Sato star in the Australian film Rhapsody of Love . Public outcry over the lack of Asian representation and visibility in Hollywood has been raging for almost two decades, and it is picking up steam. Films such as ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ in 2018, with an all-Asian lead cast, pushed the cause into the mainstream. Natalie Abbott’s very first TV role has catapulted her from theatre into a leading role, rubbing shoulders with seasoned professionals and getting recognised in the street. But Aftertaste is worth the benefit of the doubt. Itâs a sharp satire that skewers the hollow construct of the celebrity chef and offers a uniquely Australian pisstake thatâs often laugh-out-loud funny. ....

But ABC Director Entertainment & Specialist Michael Carrington tells TV Tonight about some of the surprises in store this year. New comedy Aftertaste, with Erik Thomson as an angry chef returning home to Adelaide, premieres tonight. The series is produced by Closer Productions ( The Hunting) with Michael Carrington noting Thomson’s abrasive character will face redemption. “We’re very excited about it. It’s a terrific comedy, starring Erik Thompson and Natalie Abbott. Her character is charming, and gives the emotional, humorous connection, that hopefully softens him as the series progresses,” he says. ....
