This announcement that affects 585 workers at the Ilion plant is part of the larger Chapter 11 bankruptcy of the company, impacting workers around the United States. The United Mine Workers of America has filed a claim in the bankruptcy proceedings on behalf of the terminated workers. Severance pay benefits at this plant were gained through a collective bargaining agreement between the Remington Outdoor company and the employees represented by the UMWA, Local 717. The total value of the severance that is owed to the terminated workers is $514,093. The assets of Remington, including the Ilion plant, were sold at auction for approximately $160 million as part of the bankruptcy process. Some 200 former Remington Arms employees have been offered jobs with the new owners starting in February, according to a union official, but there are concerns. Meanwhile, union members are continuing their fight for contractual benefits they say the old company still owes them. Members of United Mine Workers of America Local 717 were at the intersection of Main Street and Central Avenue in Ilion Monday morning to call for the severance pay and unused vacation pay included in the union contract. Passing motorists waved and honked as participants held up signs and shouted chants. “I say severance, you say pay,” one of the leaders called out. ....

Some 30 people participated in an informational picket here Dec. 5 to show support for United Mine Workers Local 717 members demanding Remington Outdoor Co. honor their union contract. Remington bosses filed for bankruptcy in July, terminated 585 workers in October, and cut off their health care and access to other benefits. They also refused to give severance and accrued vacation pay. Local 717 has held rallies twice a week here since the layoffs, and plans to continue. The company has run the plant since 1828. In bankruptcy it sold off its brands of shotguns, rifles and ammunition to seven different buyers. It sold the plant to Roundhill Group, whose boss says he wants to refit it to build guns sometime in the future. The union says it wants jobs and a union contract when the plant reopens. There are few other industrial employers in Ilion, a village of 8,000. ....
