Deming: Why five tops three, but it won t be easy
Dan Deming
Reno County Commissioners are again looking at expanding to five rather than three members. That s good news for those believing in better government, more ideas and improved representation.
Getting that question passed by voters may take more time, however, than voting this November. Placing the proposition on the 2022 general election ballot, when far more voters go to the polls, is probably a better idea. It would give more opportunity for a thorough study of the challenging re-alignment of commission districts to meet state law standards and selling merits to a skeptical electorate.
Community leaders hope to conduct 60 small group meetings in July to gather public comment on how to spend the $17 million-plus coming to the city and county.
New tipping fee on construction waste approved for Reno County landfill
Starting in January, residents hauling construction or demolition waste to the Reno County landfill will have to begin paying a minimum $10 per trip fee.
The Reno County Commission approved the new tipping fee on Tuesday. The board also OK d a hike in an annual assessment on commercial and industrial businesses.
Both are to support anticipated increased costs for operating the landfill in the future.
The new fee on construction and demolition waste or C&D will be $10 per ton, with a minimum of $10 per load.
The fee does not apply to the disposal of brush, household trash, metal debris such as appliances, or tires.
