Florida's race for governor: Charlie Crist announces another run

DeSantis took a jab at Crist s party-switching Tuesday.
“Which party is he going to run under? Do we know for sure,” said DeSantis, who clearly was ready with a practiced answer when asked by reporters about Crist’s emergence as a challenger.
“He’s run as a Republican and lost, run as an independent and lost and run as a Democrat and lost,” DeSantis added. “Now I see he’s voting with (U.S. House Speaker) Nancy Pelosi 100% of the time, he could probably give it a run for the Green Party in San Francisco.”
Democrats largely have embraced Crist, though, nominating him for governor in 2014 and sending him to Congress in 2016, where he has served ever since. In doing so, they overlooked some of his more conservative positions, including a tough-on-crime past that earned him the nickname “Chain Gang Charlie.” ....

ST. PETERSBURG — Gov. Ron DeSantis said Monday he was issuing an executive order immediately suspending any local pandemic-related restrictions.
During a bill signing at The Big Catch at Salt Creek, a restaurant near downtown St. Petersburg, DeSantis said ending local restrictions was the “evidence-based thing to do” considering the availability of vaccines.
“I think folks that are saying that they need to be policing people at this point, if you’re saying that, you really are saying you don’t believe in the vaccines, you don’t believe in the data,” he said. ....

County commissioners get update on proposed Clearwater CRA

LARGO — Pinellas County commissioners listened to a staff report during an April 8 work session about progress made toward a new Community Redevelopment Area in the city of Clearwater’s North Greenwood area.
Evan Johnson, Planning Division manager, told commissioners that the city had completed the finding of necessity study, which included six areas for possible inclusion in the CRA. He said the study had included an examination of socio-economic data, crime/code statistics, as well as fieldwork.
Preliminary results showed that two of the six areas supported the necessary finding of blight —North Fort Harrison/Osceola and the North Greenwood extension. In addition, Johnson said, when the downtown area was added to the analysis with the other two, it also supported the finding of blight, which is necessary for a CRA. ....

Pinellas extends state of emergency; mask ordinance to continue

LARGO — Pinellas County Administrator Barry Burton has extended the local state of emergency for COVID-19 through April 16. The extension continues the ordinance requiring face coverings be worn indoors in public places.
In addition, customers at restaurants and bars must be seated to be served and employees that handle food or drink must wear masks indoors and outdoors.
During an April 8 work session, County commissioners discussed a renewed effort by anti-maskers to get them to lift the mask mandate. County Attorney Jewel White said to put any potential action on the ordinance on the April 13 meeting agenda, commissioner would have to decide that day (April 8) to have time to meet the Tampa Bay Times’ deadline. ....
