And a lack of broadband or mobile data means many are struggling to stay connected to their families, access language courses, or help their children with their schoolwork.
Though the Home Office denies the existence of a “digital divide with asylum seekers”, charities that help asylum seekers paint a grim picture of the situation. ....

Unwell asylum seekers living in former military camps are being blocked from accessing GPs because of “gatekeeping” by Home Office-contracted staff running the sites, doctors and lawyers warn.
Concerns have been mounting about conditions at two Ministry of Defence sites – known as Napier Barracks, in Kent, and Penally Barracks, in Pembrokeshire – since they were repurposed last September for housing asylum seekers.
Doctors from charities supporting residents of the camps said people’s health conditions were worsening because non-medical staff at the barracks – employed by Home Office contractor Clearsprings Ready Homes – were making their own assessment on whether people presenting with medical problems should be referred to a GP. ....

An asylum seeker had to be taken to hospital earlier this month after falling ill during a days-long hunger strike over the conditions at the Penally military camp, where dozens of asylum seekers and migrants are currently being housed.
Speaking to
The Independent, asylum seekers and local volunteers said multiple men being housed at the Penally military site have fallen ill over the past month, with a lack of adequate nutrition and poor conditions at the camp being held to blame.
In one case, an ambulance had to be called to the Penally campsite on 16 December after an asylum seeker was reported to have fainted after participating in a days-long hunger strike protesting the food and conditions at the camp.  ....
