University of Louisville sports medicine chief sentenced in HGH case

LOUISVILLE, Ky.   The chief of sports medicine at the University of Louisville s medical school was ordered Thursday to serve a year of probation and pay a $45,000 fine after he admitted to ordering unapproved human growth hormone from China. Dr. Lonnie R. Douglas had been charged in February with one count of conspiracy to introduce unapproved human growth hormone into interstate commerce. Douglas answered questions from U.S. Magistrate Judge Regina Edwards but otherwise did not give a statement during Thursday’s hearing. Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie Zimdahl said although Douglas accepted responsibility for his actions in the plea deal, it was “still a serious offense,” particularly given that he is “trusted as a doctor.”
