Lentils grown by Saskatchewan farmers donated to Regina Food Bank

Viterra will be spending $225,000 to purchase and process pulses from farmers, which then will be used to provide more than 200,000 bags of lentils for families in the Regina region.
It’s all a part of a program called ‘Viterra Farmers Feeding Families’ which was announced by Viterra on Wednesday.
The company’s North America CEO, Kyle Jeworski, said it feels important to feed people at home.
“We’re proud to be making this significant investment in Regina to further support our farmers and our local community,” Jeworski said.
“This is something we’ve been working on for quite some time and we’re ready to go, I think on all accounts, and we look forward to getting these into people’s hands and them eating it.” ....

Regina Food Bank announced a new collaborative effort with Saskatchewan farmers that will help them feed more families in the city. The food bank is working with Viterra to hand out more than 200,000 bags of pulses to food insecure clients annually.

Regina Food Bank and Viterra announce initiative to fight food insecurity

The Regina Food Bank and Viterra have launched an initiative to use Saskatchewan’s agriculture industry to provide food insecure families with more food options.
The initiative, called ‘Viterra Farmers Feeding Families,’ will see Viterra invest $225,000 to purchase and process pulses from farmers, to donate to the Regina Food Bank.
The pulses will be processed at the food bank. Regina-based Canmar Food Product will then package the pulses into approximately 200,000 bags annually.
Viterra said the federal government has invested $200,000 into the initiative, which will be used to purchase a new fleet of delivery vehicles for the Regina Food Bank. ....

COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the number of people using the services of the Regina Food Bank, but a partnership with Viterra is expected to provide help.
“I think COVID has really put a stress test to how healthy our economy is, and I think a lot of the folks that we’re seeing especially that increase are folks that maybe never saw themselves as being potential food bank clients and are now actively using us in a way that supports what they do,” said John Bailey, CEO of the Regina Food Bank, on Wednesday. “So I think COVID had been a real driver of a lot of it.” ....

Viterra and the Regina Food Bank have partnered together for a new initiative aimed at providing locally grown protein to those in need.
The program, called “Viterra Farmers Feeding Families” will supply red lentils to food-insecure families in the Regina area.
Food Bank CEO John Bailey says the program will allow them to have better control of their food supply and feed more families.
“Allowing us to do this, A, allows us to make sure that the staples of our hampers are more nutritious and locally sourced, which is fantastic,” said Bailey. “It also means that we’re part of that supply chain instead of being, sort of, on the outside looking in, and just trying to purchase in times when everybody else is trying to get their hands on product as well.” ....
