Wednesday June 29, 2011
Week 16 featured three games were decided by a single point, while four others were blowouts of at least 20 or more points. Jacksonville won the American Conference regular season crown and its record-breaking 13th straight game, Cleveland handed San Jose the second worst defeat in AFL history, Tommy Grady hit the century mark and Orlando s playoff streak might be in jeopardy. This and much more await you in this week s Breaking it Down.

SHARKS CLAIM #1 SEED IN AMERICAN CONFERENCE AGAIN
In just two seasons in the AFL, the Jacksonville Sharks have not just won the always-tough South Division that features AFL legacy teams in Tampa Bay and Orlando, but have claimed the top seed in the American Conference portion of the playoffs both years. Saturday s 25-point win over Tampa Bay marked the Sharks 13th straight win, which is a new AFL record for consecutive wins in a season. In four games against the five-time ArenaBowl ch ....

GUEST COLUMN: U.S. Space Command belongs permanently in Colorado Springs

The Air Force is weeks away from announcing the permanent location of U.S. Space Command, the headquarters overseeing military space operations. Since the president announced the formation of the eleventh combatant command 16 months ago, the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce & Economic Development Corp. has been leading the community’s response, under the campaign Winning USSPACECOM.
U.S. Space Command belongs in Colorado Springs, in part because of the strong business ecosystem that provides the Department of Defense with technical support, innovation, and talent.
Technical Support. More than 250 companies and organizations in El Paso County operate in the aerospace and defense industry. Global firms including Boeing, Cobham, Jacobs, Kratos, Lockheed Martin, L3Harris, Northrop Grumman, and others employ thousands of local civilians at our five military installations, and private contractors throughout the region, who deliver goods and services to the military. Space Command belongs here in Colorado Springs: State leaders make closing argument

Amid the hue and cry over where U.S. Space Command will be permanently housed, one set of voices has been conspicuously absent: the troops who serve in the headquarters no matter where it calls home.
Members of the military are carefully taught to stay quiet about government decisions. America’s long history of civilian leadership over the military means those in uniform keep mum.
The association that represents most of those who serve the command, however, is now voicing a preference: keep it in Colorado Springs.
RELATED:
Matt Anderson, an Air Force colonel and spokesman for the yearold Space Force Association that serves as a voice for members of the nation’s newest service, said his organization is convinced the command should be kept here for military reasons alone. ....

ORLANDO 35, MILWAUKEE 30
The Mustangs didn t score an offensive touchdown for the game s first 46 minutes and 40 seconds and the team was actually still in the game thanks to an INT returned for a score and three field goals.
Orlando didn t fare better as the Preds scored only on one of its first seven possessions.
Each team was flagged for 12 penalties in this low-scoring game and both starting QBs tossed three picks.
Predators DB Rayshaun Kizer added two more interceptions to his AFL lead and became the first player with back-to-back seasons with 10 or more interceptions since fellow Orlando teammate and AFL all-time INT king Kenny McEntyre did so in the 2003 and 2004 seasons (The Glove also had back-to-back 10+ INT seasons in 2001-02). ....
