That’s just one of the questions Thanawala hopes people will seek the answer for as Indiana and the country mark Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. “We want people to celebrate the culture,” said Thanawala, who said there are 170,000 Asian Americans from various countries living in Indiana. “When we all come together, there is a lot of different cultures, so we are not monolithic, but we are all coming from a vast continent from Asia,” Thanawala said. “That’s a common thread we have. ....

May 12, 2021 / 07:38 PM EST INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) Around 40 Asian nationalities are represented in Indiana, and, if you ever wanted to know more about the heritage, now is the time to learn: Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Asian community members said the observation isn’t just about highlighting heritage, but hopefully a chance to help bridge cultural gaps between all communities. Sometimes that can happen through conversations, food and so much more, and you can find it all in central Indiana. Indiana is home to roughly 170,000 Asian Pacific Islanders. Philip Smith was born in the Philippines and adopted into an American family. “I know there is a lot of issues going around about discrimination and racism, but I think if you can educate someone then you can tear down those walls,” Smith said. ....

In the last year, we’ve seen several violent incidents. And some in our local Asian community are feeling the emotional toll. This last year has been a challenging one in the Asian community: starting with backlash from COVID-19, to seeing spikes in hate related crimes, to the deadly shootings in Georgia to the deadly FedEx shooting in Indianapolis. And the trauma on top of trauma is taking a toll. It’s hard to move past trauma when it keeps happening. And in the last year, the Asian community knows all too well what that’s like. ....
