Estuary 2021 brings over 90 artworks and events to the 107-mile trail of the Thames Estuary


THE festival has been curated in response to the Thames Estuary and the lives, landscapes and histories found there. A mix of large scale and intimate visual art, literature, music and film, it celebrates culture, creativity, recovery and renewal. Conceived to be enjoyed for free, outdoors and in a COVID-19 secure way, the festival invites visitors to take an epic walk along the stunning shorelines of South Essex and North Kent encountering contemporary artworks, storytelling and performance within the estuary’s landscape, historic sites and coastal towns. 
Visitors to the multiple sites across Essex can: 
ï Plan an estuary pub crawl to find specially made mirrors in five historic hostelries including the Crooked Billet in the picturesque fishing village of Old Leigh, Barge Gladys on the water at Benfleet Creek, Lobster Smack on Canvey Island, The White Lion at Fobbing and The Worlds End, Tilbury. ....

The Duchess of Cambridge is an avid amateur photographer whose pictures of her family have appeared all around the world.
However, even she has revealed the problems faced by any family snapper - keeping the children under control. 
During a visit to the National Portrait Gallery she was shown one of the earliest family photographs in the gallery’s collection, one showing the inventor Sir Charles Wheatstone and his family from 1851.
After seeing the daguerreotype the Duchess exclaimed: “I just don’t know how they kept the children still!” ....

Estuary 2021 - new artists and events announced


ESTUARY 2021 is a large-scale live and online arts festival which will see over 90 works and events presented in outdoor locations across Essex and Kent, from Shoeburyness to Tilbury, from Gravesend to Margate; including
Wat Tyler Country Park, Pitsea and Southend on Sea in Essex: The programme extends from the most easterly points of the Thames as it merges with the North Sea, and into London, with programme at Lesnes Abbey Woods.
The newly announced programme adds to a line-up of over 70 contributors including: Mary Mattingly; Marcus Coates; Ackroyd & Harvey; Sadie Hennessey; Jack McNamara; Caroline Bird and Selina Nwulu; Jas Dhillon, James Marriott, Lu Williams and Elsa James; Robert Macfarlane, Zoe Svendsen and Carolyn Downing; Shona Illingworth and Patrick Wright; and Bob and Roberta Smith. ....

Changing the world through music - online jukebox raises funds for Big Noise Dundee

Tonight, an online jukebox of musicians will come together to perform songs of solidarity and struggle. It’s to raise funds for the children’s Big Noise Douglas Orchestra which is supported by Optimistic Sound, the charity established in memory of the late Michael Marra.
Organised by the University of Cooper Gallery, the event is part of the wider project ‘The Ignorant Art School: Five Sit-ins towards Creative Emancipation’, launched earlier this year with Sit-in #1 by internationally celebrated Scottish artist Ruth Ewan.
An Optimism Class: A Jukebox of People Trying to Change the World brings together a range of choirs and solo artists, where contributors will perform songs that explore ideas of social transformation. ....
