Letters: I want no part of a country that sanctions this cruel and xenophobic action

A group of migrants pictured in the Channel. Priti Patel s Nationality and Borders Bill could, if passed, see such boats forced out of UK waters
I DIDN’T know whether to laugh or cry while reading the letter from Clark Cross (July 8). He claims that people make the hazardous journey here to seek asylum because the UK is “the land flowing with milk, honey, welfare benefits and housing”. In fact asylum seekers are kept in very basic accommodation, are denied the opportunity to work, and are given less than £40 per week to survive on. You can’t buy much milk and honey for a little over a fiver a day. ....

Letters: Shame on Alister Jack for stirring up needless conflict

ALLAN Thompson (Letters, July 2) complains that the Scottish Government is fabricating grievances over the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, a treaty which the UK already signed up to in the 1990s. May I remind Mr Thompson that the Scottish bill incorporating this into domestic law in Scotland was passed unanimously in the Scottish Parliament in March, where its passage proved uncontentious.
Far from the SNP-led Scottish Government fabricating grievances, the boot is I’m afraid firmly on the other foot: it is the Scotland Office under Alister Jack which is unnecessarily fomenting conflict between the UK and the Scottish governments. Mr Jack is attempting to curtail the rights of the Scottish Parliament to legislate on child welfare in Scotland. We must ask ourselves why the UK Government would wish to challenge legislation in Scotland affecting children’s UN rights when it has already signed up to the treaty? Unless it wishes to dilute the UN treaty rights of S ....

Letters: We cannot persist with a care system that cost so many lives

THE claim by Donald Macaskill from Scottish Care that older people with dementia were responsible for the Covid death rates in nursing homes ( Death rates higher in larger care homes , The Herald, May 27) represents a new low in the private care industry s attempts to deflect responsibility from the disaster that happened last year.
Large care homes are typically built in wings or as separate units . If these had been properly managed, outbreaks should have been no different to smaller homes. A 120-place care home, divided into four 30-bed units, should have had the same infection rates as a 30-place home, while a 60-place home divided in three, the same as a 20-place home. ....
