April is National Poetry month and in this edition of
Talk of Iowa, host Charity Nebbe will speak to some young people who have not just found an outlet through poetry and spoken word performance, they’ve found community and a lifeline that s helped them through the coronavirus pandemic.
The conversation begins with the people who helped guide these student poets: Caleb Rainey and Leah Waughtal. Rainey is a poet and spoken word performer, also known as “The Negro Artist,” and the founder and program director of IC Speaks, a spoken word poetry program in Iowa City. Waughtal is also a poet and Movement 515 coordinator, a spoken word program that is part of RUN DSM in Des Moines. ....

Agape provides free feminine hygiene products

A nonprofit in Bloomsburg is giving out free feminine hygiene products to women and teenage girls.

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. Cars lined up outside Agape in Bloomsburg for the nonprofit s weekly food distribution.
But on the first Thursday of each month, food isn t the only thing that s given out.
Women are also given free feminine hygiene products.
It s one of those unspoken needs that really gets to the heart of some issues for young women going through school and also any woman in general, Laurie Swank said.
Laurie Swank runs Agape s Women in Need project, which is in its second year. ....

You’ve Been Trumped filmmaker Anthony Baxter’s new documentary about Scottish landscape painter James Morrison presents an unexpectedly tender portrait of the artist as an old man.
Unlike his previous high-profile films – about former US president Donald Trump’s corporate assault on the Aberdeenshire coastline and a town in crisis thanks to civic negligence of its water system in Flint, Michigan – Eye of the Storm sees Baxter in quieter, more reflective mode in his home town of Montrose.
Eye of the Storm, a reference to Morrison’s habit of painting outside in all weathers for most of his career, was filmed by Baxter during the last two years of his life. The Glasgow-born artist, who trained under David Donaldson at the city’s school of art in the early 1950s, died last August at the age of 88 after a career spanning six decades.
