Charities push for PM to honour social care commitment, two years after pledge


Charities say they will continue working to make sure the Government does not “forget the commitment it has made”, exactly two years after the Prime Minister promised to fix the crisis in social care.
Some 1.4 million requests for care from older people have been turned down by local authorities in England since Boris Johnson’s historic pledge, according to Age UK.
The charity, which analysed data from NHS Digital, said this equates to nearly 14,000 people aged 65 and over a week not getting the vital care and support they believe they need.
In 24% of these cases the local council found they did not meet the eligibility criteria for social care support, and in 26% they were referred to other services after being found ineligible, Age UK said. ....

Nearly 15,000 people are likely to have died painful and undignified deaths at home when hospitals were closed to them last year, experts have revealed.
A major new report warns of a palliative care crisis brought on by the pandemic, which has seen a huge shift in the number of people dying outside of hospital without the necessary support.
Cancer patients and those with severe heart disease are among those who have been left to manage their final days without expert care, according to the Institute of Public Policy Research (IPPR). ....
