150,000 families receive welfare support in Rwandan capital during pandemic lockdown - World News

KIGALI, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) About 150,000 families in the Rwandan capital city Kigali have received welfare support from the government since Jan. 18 when a COVID-19 lockdown came into force, an official said on Sunday.
The lockdown, which was only imposed in Kigali, is scheduled to be replaced with a curfew and other restrictions since Monday.
Up to 3,500 tons of assorted foodstuffs were distributed and benefited roughly 500,000 people, said Anastase Shyaka, a minister of Local Government, during a talk show about the status of the COVID-19 pandemic on national broadcaster Rwanda Television. ....

KIGALI, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) The Rwandan government on Tuesday extended nationwide measures against COVID-19 until Sunday, including a lockdown in the capital city Kigali, while a curfew with other restrictions were announced to replace the lockdown for the next two weeks starting Feb. 8.
Rwandan Minister of Health Daniel Ngamije said later Tuesday that the extension will help to consolidate gains brought by the lockdown.
Health tests showed that the lockdown imposed on Kigali in the past two weeks slowed down the virus transmission, Ngamije said on the national broadcaster Rwanda Television, adding that before the lockdown, cases registered in Kigali were more than all cases in provinces combined, while the latest figures showed that the capital registered fewer cases compared to provinces. ....

KIGALI, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) A Rwandan health official on Thursday said Rwanda has addressed the challenge of storing COVID-19 vaccines at low temperatures and has capacity to store about 300,000 vaccine doses.
Currently we have no storage challenge for vaccines, Hassan Sibomana, head of Rwanda Biomedical Center s vaccination unit, told the national broadcaster Rwanda Television.
Five new ultra-cold freezers were purchased while other equipment to be used to transport the vaccines to different parts of the country are also ready, he said, adding that the government takes vaccine safety a priority to avoid any side effects on vaccinated people and have established a specialized and experienced team in charge of vaccine storage. ....
