Locust outbreak ravages parts of Zimbabwe Sifelani Tsiko Agric, Environment & Innovations Editor Farmers in Masvingo, Chiredzi and parts of Manicaland are battling a new round of locust outbreaks with swarms of a local type of species damaging their sorghum and maize crops, a senior plant protection expert says. Shingirai Nyamutukwa, head of the Plant Protection Research Institute told the Herald yesterday that they had detected an outbreak of three indigenous species which do not spread over long distances unlike the African migratory locust. “We are experiencing an increase in the number of local locust species which have been sighted in Masvingo and Chiredzi and parts of Manicaland,” he said. ....
Mon, 22 Feb 2021 18:38 UTC A total of eight people are said to have drowned while trying to cross flooded rivers in Chiredzi District, Masvingo. The number was confirmed by Chiredzi District Development Coordinator, Mr. Lovemore Chisema who warned members of the public against attempting at flooded rivers. Chisema who is also the chairperson of the District s Civil Protection Department said more than 20 houses have been destroyed due to floods. He said: We are imploring citizens to be cautious and exercise patience by avoiding crossing flooded rivers. Many of our rivers are currently flooded and the most affected area is Chiredzi South where all economic activities have been cut down as they cannot cross Runde River to access Chiredzi town. ....

A 68-year-old Mwenezi man was killed by a hippopotamus while fishing on Saturday. Zimbabwe National Parks Authority (Zimparks) public relations manager Tinashe Farawo confirmed the incident saying rangers were now tracking the vicious mammal. “It is with great sadness that we announce the demise of a 68-year-old man from Chief Masunda area, Mwenezi who was killed by a hippo while fishing in Mabasa Weir along Runde River on February 13, 2021. Zimparks rangers are attending to the problem hippos,” Farawo said. Cases of human-wildlife conflict are common in Zimbabwe, with Zimparks last year reporting that a total of 50 people were killed my wild animals between January to August alone. ....
CPU on high alert as Tugwi-Mukosi swells Masvingo Bureau The Civil Protection Unit (CPU) is on high alert over possible flooding downstream of Tugwi-Mukosi Dam in southern Masvingo, with an Air Force of Zimbabwe helicopter being put on standby to airlift affected families, as the dam nears spilling, allowing the Tugwi River to flow unimpeded. Tugwi-Mukosi, Zimbabwe’s largest interior dam situated in Chivi district near Ngundu Growth Point, was yesterday afternoon 89 percent full, raising prospects that it could spill in the next few days. When the dam spills, there are fears that the extra flow from upstream will cause the already-swollen Tugwi River downstream of the reservoir to burst its banks and affect communities in Chivi and Chiredzi districts. ....
