The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets shaved a 19-point second-half deficit to four, but could not complete their comeback attempt as the Concordia Tornados emerged with a 92-84 American Southwest Conference victory Thursday night at the Brownwood Coliseum.
The Yellow Jackets (0-12, 0-8) were plagued by 26 turnovers that resulted in 21 points for Concordia (2-4, 1-4). The Tornados also outscored Howard Payne, 44-28, in the paint, despite the Yellow Jackets’ 39-34 edge in rebounds.
Howard Payne converted 48 percent (29 of 61) of its field goals and 41 percent (13 of 32) of its three-pointers, but just 54 percent (13 of 24) of its free throws. Meanwhile, Concordia sank 52 percent (34 of 65) of its shots, 36 percent (10 of 27) of its treys and 64 percent (14 of 22) of its attempts from the charity stripe.

The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets tumbled to 0-9 on the season and 0-5 in American Southwest Conference action with an 87-51 home loss to the East Texas Baptist Tigers Saturday afternoon at the Brownwood Coliseum.
Howard Payne fell behind ETBU (9-5, 3-2) by a 43-19 count at halftime and wasn’t able to make up any ground over the final 20 minutes.
The Yellow Jackets shot 31 percent (17 of 55) from the floor, 18 percent (4 of 22) from three-point land, and 61 percent (14 of 23) at the free throw line. HPU was also outrebounded 50-30 and committed 24 turnovers while creating 19.

“There was some good and some bad and we had our moments,” said Yellow Jackets head coach Troy Drummond. “Our energy level was good and offensively we shot a little bit better than what we normally do from the field, but we’re still rushing the ball and taking some bad shots, but that’s guys trying to get something going.”
The Howard Payne Yellow Jacket men are still looking for their first basketball victory of the young season after losing their American Southwest Conference opener 88-63 to Sul Ross. The Jackets are 0-5 (0-1).
In a game played at the Brownwood Coliseum, Howard Payne shot 33 percent (24 of 73) from the floor, including 26 percent (6 of 23) from the three-point arc, while converting 64 percent (9 of 14) of its free throws. The Yellow Jackets were outrebounded 54-41 and committed 14 turnovers that led to 18 Sul Ross points.
Tyrell Thompson led Howard Payne with 19 points trailed by nine each from James Helzer and Jacob Smith, Brad House and Michael House with six points apiece, Evan Adkins with five, Reese Ridder and Bryce Tousha with three each, Mason Green with two and Harold Myart with one point.
