Oberlin, Louisiana – A cemetery in Oberlin (LA) has issued an apology after it denied the burial of a Black sheriff’s deputy. The Hill reports that Karla Semien, the widow of late Officer Darrell “Soul” Robert Semien, brought the issue up online after she attempted to bury her late husband at Oaklin Springs. Semien was informed that she was ineligible to purchase a plot of land due to the whites-only clause.
The Associated Press reported that the board of the Cemetery held an emergency meeting to remove the whites-only provision from its plot sales contracts. ....

A grieving Louisiana woman has said she was told she could not bury her husband at a cemetery near his home because it was for whites only.
Karla Semien, whose husband Darrell Semien died on Sunday after being diagnosed with cancer last month, said that when she tried to organise a burial at the Oaklin Springs cemetery in the city of Oberlin she was told it would not be possible. ....

A small Louisiana cemetery has changed its sales contracts after a Black sheriff s deputy was denied burial because of a provision that allowed only white people to be buried there.
The board of Oaklin Springs Cemetery held an emergency meeting Thursday to change the provision, which had been in the sales contracts since the cemetery was founded in the late 1950s, according to board president H. Creig Vizena. He said the board removed the word “white” from a line in the a contract that had said “for the burial of the remains of white human beings.” ....
