But Arizona s community colleges appear to be on the verge of being able to offer four-year degrees.
On a 24-6 vote Wednesday, the Senate gave final approval to legislation setting out the conditions for these traditional two-year and certificate institutions to start offering baccalaureate degrees. With the House already having approved, the only thing that remains now is a decision by Gov. Doug Ducey.
An aide to the governor said he does not comment on pending legislation.
Ducey is likely to face a last-ditch effort by the Arizona Board of Regents which has for at least 40 years fought any effort to infringe on what it sees as its turf as the governing body of the state s three universities. Sen. Paul Boyer, R-Glendale, one of the champions of SB 1453, said they tried to quash this bill, even after proponents included much of what the universities wanted limiting when and how such upper division courses can be offered.

TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - Investigators with the Pima County Sheriffâs Department are searching for 84-year-old Glenn Yauney, who was last seen at a home in Green Valley.
Yauney left a house near the intersection of south Campina Court and west Mariquita Street at around 6 p.m. Friday, April 23, 2021, in a white 2016 Toyota RAV4, with the Oregon plate 809 JKS. The front plate reads SUNBUM.
He is described as 6-feet 2-inches. bald with blue eyes and 209 pounds, according to a news release from the county sheriffâs department. He was last seen wearing a shirt of unknown color and blue jeans.
Sweeping abortion bill passes on party lines
Acting under the banner of protecting disability rights, the Republican-controlled legislature on Thursday voted along party lines to impose a new restriction on a woman’s right to terminate a pregnancy by making it a crime to abort a child because of a fetal genetic defect.
SB1457, which now goes to Gov. Doug Ducey, says any medical professional who performs or aids an abortion in those cases can be sentenced to up to a year in state prison. Ducey has not said whether he will sign or veto the measure.
