Previous image Next image The Knight Science Journalism Program at MIT has named Oregon Public Broadcasting’s “Timber Wars” podcast as 2021 winner of the prestigious Victor K. McElheny Award for local and regional science journalism. The seven-part series tells the story of how a group of activists and scientists turned a fight over logging and animal protection into one of the biggest environmental conflicts of the 20th century a conflict that still resonates in culture wars today. The podcast is the first work of audio journalism to win the McElheny Award in the competition’s three-year history.

OKLAHOMA COVID-19: Oklahoma National Guard mourns member who died due to complications from COVID-19

Updated: 9:11 AM CST Feb 19, 2021 KOCO Staff The Oklahoma National Guard is mourning the death of a member due to complications brought on by COVID-19. Retired Col. Carl Franks, of Norman, died on Feb. 13 at the age of 57, officials said. At the time of his death, Franks served as the Director of Youth Programs for the Oklahoma Military Department.Franks enlisted in the Oklahoma Army National Guard on Dec. 11, 1981, as a Power Generator and Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic with the 1345th Transportation Company. On Dec. 21, 1985, Franks was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Transportation Corps through Oklahoma State University’s Reserve Officer Training Corps, according to the National Guard.In 1991, then-Capt. Franks deployed to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in support of Desert Storm/Shield as the commander of the Oklahoma Army National Guard’s 1345th Transportation Company.“Franks’ command of the 1345th was one of many successes in a brilliant milita
