As we are coping with the second wave of
COVID-19 and its consequent ramifications on our lives euphemistically termed ‘the new normal’ cutting corners and downsizing have become mainstay operations. Indeed, for over a year now, they have been topics of hushed discussions at the water fountains in corporate offices and within the privacy of our living rooms.
The wily virus has snatched away many of our loved ones, just as we suffered job losses thanks to businesses shutting down and corporates cutting back. A few years ago high net worth individuals, comprising a sizeable section of the upper middleclass, rode the crest on disposable incomes all of it taken away in a jiffy. Social media posts of lavish weddings and fish-faced selfies at St Tropez or atop Mt Kilimanjaro morphed into images of one-pot meals, baking sourdough bread and whipping up foamy coffee at home. ....
