Date Time Story of nurse in Maffra Library mosaic to be told Sister Irene Singleton, a nurse who survived the World War 2 Bangka Island Massacre, will be remembered at a special talk by Arlene Bennett, president of the Australian Nurses Memorial Centre, at Maffra Library, on Monday 21 June. Irene Singleton was born in Riverslea, near Maffra, and a historic mosaic dedicated to the memory of Singleton is mounted on the wall of Maffra Library. On what would have been Singleton’s birthday, Ms Bennett will discuss her life as a WWII nurse, the bombing of her ship the SS Vyner Brook, her survival of the Bangka Island Massacre on Sumatra, and her death in a prisoner-of-war camp. ....
JOINT STATEMENT The new bridge over the Fitzroy River has officially opened. The $12.5 million structure at Riverslea is the third road upgrade delivered as part of the $367.2 million Rookwood Weir project. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the Rookwood Weir project is supporting employment and economic development opportunities and will significantly increase water security for Central Queensland. “The Rookwood Weir is a great example of the Australian Government delivering the water infrastructure that will form the National Water Grid, our $3.5 billion investment to secure Australia’s water future.” Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning Steven Miles today officially opened the new bridge and handed its ownership over to Rockhampton Regional Council. ....
Once again, the hyacinth blooms are washing down the Fitzroy River catchment, out to sea, as cyclonic conditions further north cause flooding. Areas in western and northern parts of the catchment recorded significant rainfall and flooding in recent weeks due to a number of weather systems, including ex-TC Imogen. Hyacinth is known to impede water flow, reduce fish habitat and block access to water for stock and wildlife. It can also impact boaties in the region, and those out on the water should take extra care to ensure it doesn’t build up on their anchors or get tangled in propellers. ....
Premium Content Subscriber only THE YEAR 2021 is shaping up to be the year of Rookwood Weir after a huge update was provided by the Queensland Government following an inspection of the project site on Thursday morning. Located 66km southwest of Rockhampton on the Fitzroy River, the $352.2 million water infrastructure project promises to provide 76,000ML water underpinning agricultural, industrial and urban growth while driving new economic and employment opportunities for the region. Jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments, and delivered in partnership with Sunwater, the Rookwood Weir will provide for more than 200 jobs during construction – with at least 140 of those to be sourced from Central Queensland. ....
