'Cluster Flies': Ryley Walker Covers 'First Tube'

Anastasio led a performance by a one-off band called
8 Foot Fluorescent Tubes on April 17, 1998, at the original Higher Ground in Winooski, just outside Burlington, Vermont. The show was the first time Anastasio performed in public with Lawton and Markellis, who were joined by guitarist/vocalist
Tom Lawson of The Pants, saxophonist
Dave Grippo, trombonist
Heloise Williams of Viperhouse.
“First Tube” was seemingly named for its placement as the first song played at the 8 Foot Fluorescent Tubes show, which also saw the premieres of future Phish/TAB songs “Sand,” “Mozambique” and “Last Tube.” Trey, Tony and Russ would go on to form the first incarnation of the Trey Anastasio Band which made its debut back at the Higher Ground in February 1999. That concert again featured “First Tube” as part of the setlist. ....

CD of the Month: Ryley Walker - "Course In Fable"

Husky Pants Records
I believe we’re currently in a golden era for underground guitar music. Records, tapes, and CDs of highly skilled picking and strumming abound these days, especially in the eastern half of the US, and one player who’s no stranger to this scene is the Brooklyn-via-Chicago guitarist Ryley Walker. With a decade of releases on multiple labels under his belt now, he’s covered everything from hushed acoustic instrumentals to spacious psych-rock escapades, with even a Dave Matthews Band cover album in the mix. His most esoteric material has typically been saved for his collaborative work, but his solo records have been growing more dense and complex over the years. Walker started his own label last year called Husky Pants Records, on which he’s released his latest solo effort, ....

Ryley Walker: Course in Fable

Open share drawer
The singer-guitarist takes a new, rangy, proggy direction with an artful touch, finding some psychedelic wisdom between the profound and the mundane.
There is always some undiscovered land in Ryley Walker’s vast world. In one hemisphere resides a full-album reinterpretation of Dave Matthews Band’s
The Lillywhite Sessions that the New York-based guitarist covered with unerring reverence and sincerity; in another, he is a living historian
cum poet of bathrooms. Just this February, he released
Deep Fried Grandeur — an improvised live set that’s like a kosmische ramble cut with Japanese psychedelic explorers Kikagaku Moyo.
Course in Fable exists somewhere new, yet again, as if the freedom afforded by releasing music on his own Husky Pants label has spurred him to always be creating on the frontier. Produced by Tortoise’s John McEntire (who also contributed synth and keyboards), ....

Sorassa Soeur: From refugee to Salon No. 5 entrepreneur in Portsmouth

Karen Dandurant
PORTSMOUTH – Sorassa Soeur sits in her beauty salon, holding Coco Bean, a French bulldog, talking about her 16 years in business at five different locations in Portsmouth.
Her success story started with spending the first seven years of her life in a refugee camp, escaping with her family, being hosted to come to America, excelling in school and hard work, ethics instilled in her by her family. She is humble and says she found her passion, making people feel great about themselves.
“The name of the refugee camp in Thailand was called Khao I Dang,” said Soeur. “The camp opened in 1979 right after the Vietnam War (with Cambodia) ended. The camp is on the border of Cambodia. We escaped Cambodia and would travel during the night. There was one incident that almost killed my whole family. I was just an infant and I let out a cry. My dad had to put his hand over my mouth the whole night as we were traveling to cross the border. Had he not done that ev ....
