Amid growing calls for police reform and national debate over the deadly use of force, police departments are struggling to retain and attract officers, law enforcement officials say.
Across the nation, police officials and union leaders described the state of recruiting as in “crisis” mode.
“It’s the perfect storm. We are anticipating that the department is going to be understaffed by several hundred members, because hundreds of guys are either retiring or taking other jobs and leaving the department,” said Mike Neilon, spokesperson for the Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 5, the union that represents city police officers. ....

Pa. state trooper charged with trying to fix a traffic ticket

The state police have charged one of their own with trying to fix a traffic ticket.
Police spokesman Ryan Tarkowski said Thursday that Trooper Trask Alexander has been charged with tampering with records or identification and obstructing the administration of law.
“Trooper Alexander is accused of attempting to withdraw a traffic citation that had been issued by another trooper to an acquaintance of Alexander’s in November 2020,” Tarkowski said.
The charges were filed by the state police internal affairs division. Alexander, who was assigned to Troop D at Beaver, has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the case, Tarkowski said. ....
